WHY: Recognize and applaud the incredible service and impact of AmeriCorps in our community

Every day, in counties and cities across America, national service is tackling tough problems and strengthening communities. On April 4, 2017, mayors and county officials across the country will thank those who serve over 75,000 annually and over 1 million in the past 20 years, and recognize their impact on the Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service.

The nation’s cities and counties are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact, making our communities better places to live. The initiative is being led by the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, Cities of Service, and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). As the federal agency for national service and volunteering, CNCS annually engages millions of citizens in service at more than 50,000 sites across the country. Through AmeriCorps (including VISTA and NCCC), Senior Corps (including Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP), the Social Innovation Fund, and other programs, CNCS leverages federal and private funds to support organizations that achieve measurable results where the need is greatest.

Much like the rest of our nation, Cincinnati strives to address the needs of our residents, young and old, who struggle with poverty and quality of life, including health problems, educational obstacles, inadequate housing, lack of food, inability to attain and retain a job, and other needs that affect their ability to support themselves and their family.

Tackling these problems is a quiet army of about 150 committed AmeriCorps members in our Cincinnati community at 60 to 75 different sites, and 75,000 members nationwide, who serve at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. Like committing to a term of Peace Corps service, these individuals, ages 18 and over, serve at specific agencies and schools, providing direct help to the community and its residents. “Since the program’s founding in 1994, almost one million AmeriCorps members have contributed more than 1.4 billion hours in service across America while tackling pressing problems and mobilizing millions of volunteers for the organizations they serve.” https://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps

This means that the person who teaches GED classes, or provides housing education to clients, or tutors the children in the low income school, or coaches the job seeker, or helps a pregnant woman secure needed health care, might actually be an AmeriCorps member, not a typical staff or volunteer. They have committed to serve full-time or part-time for a service term of 10 to 24 months, and most are paid only a small living stipend. Full time AmeriCorps members also earn an Education Award of about $5,700, after completing 1,700 hours of service and their full service term. This is a labor of love " and the community benefits tremendously!
