This workshop will focus on how regular maintenance can prevent damage and the resulting costly repairs to buildings. Topics addressed include how to inspect a building for damage, how to determine the cause of deterioration, how to devise a solution to the problem, and how to prevent future damage. Video presentations of deterioration and repairs to structures and on-site inspection of problems with Settlement School buildings will be part of the class. How to set up a regular maintenance schedule will be part of the class. Dr. James Adams is an expert architectural conservator and has worked on important historic structures in the United States and abroad. Prior to his work on conservation and preservation projects, Dr. Adams was a general contractor with trade licenses in plumbing, water-circulating heating and cooling systems, general electrical contracting, HVAC, and carpentry. His restoration work has included projects at the U.S. Justice Department, U.S. Naval Academy, The Michael Lantz Sculptures in Washington D.C., cathedrals in Europe, and restoration of artifacts at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C. At Pine Mountain, he restored the white oak steps in the School's central building. In 2004, he taught Pine Mountain's stone repointing class. Cost of the workshop is $250.00. This includes tuition, written materials, lodging and meals. Participants should bring casual clothes and comfortable walking shoes.
