"In the Footsteps of Lucy Braun," a forest study workshop, to be offered at Pine Mountain Settlement School Pine Mountain Settlement School will offer two, four-day forest study class, "In the Footsteps of Lucy Braun," June 7 through 11 and again August 23 through 27 at the School. Lucy Braun was among the foremost ecologists and botanists of the 20th Century. Her work, "The Deciduous Forests of North America," was based on nearly 25 years of field research and is still considered to be the defining reference on the subject. The workshop, which is directed toward adults, will feature field trips to five special forests in southeastern Kentucky. These forests are: Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve, an old-growth forest on the south slope of Pine Mountain; Bad Branch State Nature Preserve, an area that contains a relict hemlock gorge; Pine Mountain, a pine and oak-pine forest; Black Mountain, a high-elevation, mixed mesophytic forest and the tallest peak in Kentucky; and Lilley Cornett woods, an old-growth forest. Classes will be taught by Pine Mountain staff and state experts on the forests of the Pine Mountain area. The workshop includes field trips, lectures and slide presentations. Field trips will require hiking four to eight miles a day. Some of the hikes will be strenuous. The cost of the workshop is $275, which includes classes, meals from Wednesday supper through Sunday lunch, and lodging for four nights. Enrollment is limited to 20 people.
