"He is the Man": Illustrated Sheet Music Covers of Political Campaign Songs, 1860-1930" Dr. Theresa Leininger-Miller, Associate Professor of Art History in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati, will present a program titled "he is the man on August 19 at 1:30 pm. This slide presentation will address images used on the covers of musical campaign compositions, many of which were published in Cincinnati during the lifetime of William Howard Taft (1857-1930). The title comes from "He is the Man, Song and Chorus" made for Taft's bid for the presidency in 1900. The lecturer will examine presidential, gubernatorial, and mayoral campaign songs and marches, including those about Lincoln, Hayes, McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt; Ohio governors; and Queen City mayor, Julius Fleischmann. There will also be a discussion of patriotic hymns, military tunes, Civil War music, Cincinnati newspaper compositions, and racial uplift with such songs as "You Will Miss the Colored Soldiers" about the charge at San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. Local African American editor Wendell P. Dabney wrote the piece in 1907, when Taft was Secretary of War (1904-08). The site is open from 8 am to 4 pm and is located at 2038 Auburn Avenue across from the Christ Hospital.
