An Underground Community Exhibit - Cincinnati Event

January 15, 2018 to February 28, 2018 - Sharonville

11450 Lebanon Road
Sharonville, OH 45241
513-563-9484

Prior to being founded in 1855, the historic village of Glendale, OH was home to many blacks escaping slavery through the Underground Railroad. A third-generation Glendalean, William (Bill) Parrish started with a research plan to nominate the historically black Eckstein School building for the national register, ultimately leading to his book entitled:  “An Underground Community: How Blacks Settled in the Historic Village of Glendale”, and an exhibit by the same name located at Heritage Village Museum.

The opening reception for An Underground Community will be held on Monday, January 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will entail an exhibit and a book discussion with Bill Parrish, Founder and Executive Director of the Eckstein Cultural Arts Center, a 501c3 nonprofit arts organization. The ceremony will also feature “REDEEMED”, an acapella quartet from Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Glendale, OH.

The exhibit is uniquely captured by panels covering a timeline from 1830-1958. Visitors can engage in an insightful dialog and discover the local heroes of the Underground Railroad movement significant to the Historic Village of Glendale, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The exhibit runs through Wednesday, February 28.
